Havertown, PA (5 August 2019): In a major move that realigns the sales, marketing, and distribution of Celtic books into North America, Dufour Editions is transferring its existing distribution business to Casemate Group. In its 71st year, Dufour Editions, which publishes under its own imprint and is the distributor for dozens of British, Irish, and Scottish publishers, passes the baton to Casemate and will cease distribution operations of the affected publishers on 1 October 2019. Returns will be accepted until 31 December 2019.
“Based on Casemate’s philosophy, their hands-on level of service including marketing and publicity for their publishing clients, as well as recommendations from existing long-term clients, and their reputation with customers, we felt that Casemate was the right choice for Dufour and our clients,” said Christopher May, Managing Director of Dufour Editions. “There is a like-mindedness that made me feel comfortable and assured that this was the right decision for us.”
To date, 15 publishers have transferred to the new arrangement. All the new publishers will be in the Casemate IPM group of clients covering history, fiction, religion, current events, poetry, humor, travel, children’s books, and cookbooks including Brian McDermott’s Donegal Table which just won Best Chef Book at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards for O’Brien Press.
“O’Brien Press is delighted that our sales and distribution for the US and Canada will now be performed by Casemate,” said Ivan O’Brien, Managing Director. “We would like to thank Christopher May and all at Dufour Editions for many years of friendship and working together, but this change is energizing. We have been very impressed with the professionalism and engagement of the whole Casemate team and are confident that they will enhance visibility and sales for our authors. Casemate has a strong track record of targeting niche and specialist areas effectively and we know that they will do a great job with the Irish diaspora and Irish interest community. However, our award-winning books for readers big and small deserve the widest possible exposure, and we look forward to seeing just how big the market can get!”
Another recent major award winner is Sandstone Press’ Celestial Bodies written by Jokha Alharthi and translated by Marilyn Booth which won the 2019 International Man Booker Prize, and Robert Davidson, Founder and Managing Director, is very enthused about the new partnership. “Sandstone
Press is delighted to be represented in North America by Casemate. Our books are consistently prize winners not only in Britain and Ireland but internationally. Our authors are intelligent, funny, far seeing and, above all, great storytellers. We love great design, which includes great typography. Internationalism is a Sandstone Press byword. All in all, we believe our books are highly relevant and attractive to the North American market. Casemate brings knowledge and experience to this new relationship, as well as a deep understanding of North American readers across the great breadth of all their interests. Their team has a reputation for energy and innovation. We look forward to the future.”
The full list of publishers is Columba Press (including Currach), Dufour Editions, Eland Publishing, Gill Books (formerly known as Gill & MacMillan and including Collins Press), Goblinshead, Jantar Publishing, Liffey Press, O’Brien Press Ltd. (including Brandon), Papillote Press, Salmon Publishing Ltd., Sandstone Press Ltd., Somerville Press Ltd., Vagabond Voices Publishing, Wordwell Books (including Eastwood), and Y Lolfa.
“The Wordwell Group enjoyed a long and successful relationship with the team at Dufour,” said Ronan Colgan, Wordwell’s Managing Director. “But we are all excited about the new future for Wordwell Books and Eastwood Books with the team at Casemate US. Their reputation precedes them, and we have high hopes for what we can achieve together.”
These new clients coming on board add to Casemate’s present Scottish, Welsh, and Irish publishers some of which include Birlinn, Liberties Press, Colourpoint, Blackstaff, Enodare, and most recently Mercier Press. Concurrently, some other existing key publishing clients including Pen & Sword and Boydell & Brewer have augmented their coverage of Scottish and Irish history and culture. The new agreement with Dufour and its distribution clients makes Casemate the largest distributor of Celtic books in North America.
In an effort to smoothly accommodate the new clients, Casemate is adding to its sales department and reorganizing its marketing department.
“With our HQ offices based in Havertown, Pennsylvania, not far from Dufour Editions’ offices in Chester Springs, and a highly experienced, customer-focused in-house sales team, backed by a strong marketing and publicity team, and supported by a network of regional agents throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico, we believe the Casemate Group offers a tried, tested, and cost-effective marketing, sales, and distribution partnership for publishers.” Simone Drinkwater, VP, Business Development, Casemate Group.
Dufour will cease to take orders for the affected lists on 1 October 2019 at which point stock will transfer to Books International, Casemate’s warehouse partner in Dulles, VA. Dufour Editions will continue to publish new titles, which will be distributed globally by the Casemate Group, in both print and eBook formats, through Casemate’s international print distribution operation, based in Oxford, UK, and Casemate Digital, its US-based eBook and audiobook distribution division.
David Farnsworth, President, Casemate Group added, noted, “we have always had great admiration for Christopher and his team, enjoying a good, respectful relationship for a number of years, and we are extremely honored and pleased to be able to facilitate this arrangement with such a highly regarded group of publishers.”
